The main ingredient of PHOSPHOLIPON® 90 G, LIPOID P 100 and LIPOID H 100 is the phospholipid phosphatidylcholine (PC), which plays an important role in the process of skin formation and skin renewal. Apart from its key function as cellular membrane component, PC represents one of the main lipids in the dermis and acts as a molecular precursor of the extracellular lipid matrix in epidermal layers. During terminal differentiations of skin, PC is enzymatically hydrolyzed to free fatty acids, important building blocks of the stratum corneum and its “acid mantle”. Based on the big impact on our skin’s metabolism, phosphatidylcholine can trigger biochemical processes in the skin that counteract the visible signs of skin aging.

In vitro studies with PHOSPHOLIPON® 90 G and LIPOID H 100 have shown that PC leads to a significant increase of extracellular hyaluronic acid, the key molecule involved in binding and retaining skin moisture; PC decreases the amount of active MMP-1, one of the key enzymes responsible for UV-induced photoaging and collagen breakdown. Both effects synergistically lead, on different cellular levels, to a visible and measurable skin rejuvenation that has been confirmed by in vivo studies: PC makes the skin more elastic and reduces fine and deep wrinkles.
